Work Permits In Turkey
Every foreigner who wants to work in the Republic of Turkey must apply for a work permit, which gives them permission to do so and to live there. Work permits are obtained through the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. It is illegal to work in Türkiye in any capacity
without a work permit, and those who do so will face consequences.
The three types of work permit in Turkey are temporary, independent, and permanent.
1. Temporary Work Permit
When a foreigner's work permit application is approved, they are given a work permit for a
maximum of one year at the time of application as long as they work in a specific workplace
that is owned or controlled by a real or legal person, a public institution, or an organization,
or in a specific position at one of their workplaces in the same industry, and as long as the
term of the employment or service contract is not exceeded.
2. Permanent Work Permit
Foreign nationals may apply for a permanent work permit if they have had a long-term
residence permit or a legal work permit for at least eight years. However, simply submitting
an application grants the foreign applicant no absolute legal rights.
Aside from any rights they may have accrued regarding social security, foreign nationals with
permanent work permits are accorded the same rights as Turkish citizens and must abide by
all applicable laws when exercising those rights, with the exception of any special laws.
3. Independent Work Permit
For a limited time, independent work permits are given to foreigners in professional
occupations who meet the requirements outlined in other laws.
The foreigner's level of education, professional experience, contribution to science and
technology, as well as the impact of their investment on the nation's economy and
employment, the share of capital if they are a company partner, and other factors to be
determined by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security in accordance with the
recommendations of the International Labor Policy are all taken into consideration when
evaluating independent work permits in accordance with international labor policy.
Applications for work permits may be submitted both domestically and internationally.
Whether an application is submitted from Turkey or another country will affect the
application process.
